West Bengal Police on Saturday arrested the wife of jailed Trinamool Congress strongman Jahangir Khan for allegedly masterminding an attempt to storm a police station in Falta and forcibly secure his release. Sarina Bibi was taken into custody from South 24 Parganas after allegedly going into hiding following a protest in Falta earlier this week. Police said she was the key conspirator behind the alleged plan to free Khan. Read Full Story The arrest comes after a large group of people gathered in Falta on June 16, demanding Khan's release. The protesters later marched toward the Falta police station in a demonstration that police said was led by Bibi.
Police and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel dispersed the crowd before it could reach the station. Videos purportedly showing protesters fleeing and jumping into nearby water bodies while being chased by security personnel later circulated widely on social media. According to police, Bibi had been organising a series of protests in Falta following her husband's arrest and was allegedly attempting to disrupt law and order in the area. A case was registered against her after the June 16 incident. Besides Bibi, eight other people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had warned that those involved in the attack on the police station would not be spared.
"They must be punished so that no one can dare to attack police, government employees or paramilitary forces again," he said on Wednesday. The crackdown follows Khan's arrest by the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) near the Nepal border on June 8. He was wanted in multiple cases, including allegations of tampering with EVMs by placing tape over BJP symbols during elections in the South 24 Parganas constituency. Fielded by the TMC from Falta, Khan bowed out of the race on the eve of polls. However, he faces at least seven FIRs registered at Falta police station amid allegations of widespread electoral malpractices in the constituency.
Khan, who had adopted the moniker 'Pushpa' in an apparent challenge to Falta police observer Ajay Pal Sharma, popularly known as 'Singham', was caught while allegedly attempting to flee the country after remaining on the run for several weeks. Since his arrest, police have carried out a series of operations in Falta aimed at dismantling his alleged criminal network and restoring law and order in the region. Ends
