What Is Paschim Banga Diwas? Paschimbanga Divas, observed on June 20, commemorates the day in 1947 when the Bengal Legislative Assembly voted in favour of the partition of Bengal, leading to the creation of West Bengal as a part of India. The day is particularly significant for the BJP, which credits Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee with playing a key role in ensuring that Hindu-majority regions of undivided Bengal remained within India after Partition. The observance, however, has been a subject of political debate in the state, with the Trinamool Congress government preferring to celebrate Bangla Divas on Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year, while the BJP marks June 20 as Paschimbanga Divas.
