US President Donald Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as one of the world’s two greatest leaders, praising his longevity in office, leadership style and role in steering India’s economic growth. Responding to a journalist’s question about who he considered the two greatest leaders in the world, Trump named Chinese President Xi Jinping and PM Modi, offering glowing remarks about the Indian prime minister.

“Modi is very good. India has had some very good numbers. Modi stays out of wars, which is smart," Trump said. The US President went on to reflect on India’s political evolution over the years, contrasting past political instability with PM Modi’s long tenure in office. “All my life I’ve watched India. They just kept changing, changing, changing. Somebody would be there for six months and then a year and then all of a sudden, Prime Minister Modi ends up there," Trump said. “He has been there for more than 12 years, very solid. And he does it through, like, there’s a great calmness, and yet he’s not a calm person.

He’s a very tough guy. I know him very well," he said. Trump’s praise comes days after he underscored his personal rapport with PM Modi during their recent meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit. Asked whether India could play a larger role in West Asia, Trump said he was committed to supporting India if it came under attack, while linking that assurance directly to Modi’s leadership. “If anybody attacks that man, we’re going to be there now," Trump said, referring to PM Modi. “I think India plays a big role in everything. As long as he’s the leader."
