US Intel Warns Trump Netanyahu Could Take Steps To Sabotage His Peace Deal With Iran Published By, Last Updated: June 19, 2026, 22:54 IST US intelligence agencies circulated assessments suggesting that Netanyahu may act in ways that could disrupt Trump’s efforts to secure a lasting peace deal with Iran. (Reuters file photo) US intelligence agencies have warned the Trump administration that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could take steps that may undermine the newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the war between the United States and Iran, Washington Post reported on Friday. The assessment comes amid rising tensions over Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon, which have escalated since the signing of the MoU two days ago. The agreement was electronically signed on Wednesday by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The opening clause of the MoU calls for the “permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon". It also commits both sides to refrain from the threat or use of force and to uphold the “territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon". Warning To Trump According to the Washington Post report, US intelligence agencies circulated assessments suggesting that Netanyahu may act in ways that could disrupt Trump’s efforts to secure a lasting peace deal with Iran. Current and former US officials told the paper that the intelligence community sees a risk that Israeli military actions in Lebanon could complicate or undermine the fragile agreement. One US official familiar with the assessment was quoted as saying the intelligence reflects concern that Israel could continue or escalate operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, despite the ceasefire framework tied to the MoU. Another official said the analysis highlighted growing friction between Washington’s diplomatic objectives and Israel’s security priorities.
Strains Over Lebanon campaign The Washington Post said the intelligence assessment comes at a time of increasing pressure on Netanyahu from both domestic political actors and security officials who favour continued military operations against Hezbollah. Analysts cited in the report said Netanyahu’s political standing is closely linked to demonstrating strength against the Iran-backed group. “Permanent war — and territorial expansion — have been the animating forces of Israeli politics for years. It’s no surprise that with elections coming up, Netanyahu has to prove he can do these better than his opponent," Harrison Mann, former US Army officer who served as an analyst at the Defense Intelligence Agency, said. The report said there is concern within parts of the US administration that Israeli actions on the ground could directly challenge the implementation of the agreement, especially if military operations continue despite the stated ceasefire commitments.
