In another major blow to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Jyotipriya Mallick, the former Minister of Forests in West Bengal, resigned from, citing his adverse health conditions. The development came a few days after he was inducted in the party’s national working committee that was formed after a mutiny by the rebel MLAs and MPs orchestrated a split-like situation in the party. Read Full Story In his letter to Mamata Banerjee, Mallick wrote, “Respected Didi, I have been struggling with adverse health conditions for a long time.
My sugar level has surpassed the 350 mark, and my kidneys are also damaged. As per my doctor’s guidelines, any mental or physical stress will make the situation worse. In this context, I want to step aside from the party’s national working committee.” This serves as a major blow to the party, especially at a time when it is trying to revive its organisational strength at the grassroots. In Bengal’s political circles, Mallick has largely been an organisational man, holding supreme loyalty to Mamata Banerjee.
With his resignation, Mamata loses another close aide who could have been pivotal in reshaping the party organisation in this turbulent time. Earlier, Mallick served as the party president of the North 24 Parganas district, a region that had long been considered a bastion for the Trinamool Congress. However, its dominance went for a toss in the 2026 assembly polls when the BJP won 22 of the 33 constituencies. The trouble brewed further as Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, another e TMC leader and MP from that district, formed a separate bloc along with 19 other MPs and merged it with the Nationalist Citizens Party India (NCPI).
Meanwhile, Mallick was arrested three years back by the Enforcement Directorate for his alleged role in the alleged ration corruption in the state. He earlier served as the Food and Supply Minister of the state before assuming the role of the Forest Minister. Ends
