The Election Commission had ordered repolling in the Falta Assembly constituency on May 21 due to widespread allegations of electoral malpractice and “subversion of the democratic process". “The decision taken by Jahangir Khan to withdraw from the Falta re-poll is his personal decision and not that of the party.

However, some eventually succumbed to the pressure and chose to step away from the field.

Khan abruptly announced on Tuesday that he was withdrawing his name from the May 21 repoll in Falta, saying that Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s promise of a special package for the area’s development prompted him to take the decision. “I am the son of Falta, and I want the area to be at peace and grow. The CM has announced a special package for the development of Falta, which is why I have decided to move away from the re-polling process in the constituency," he said at a press conference. However, Adhikari claimed that Khan “ran away" from the re-election as he would not get any polling agents. The Commission directed fresh voting in all 285 polling booths in the constituency, after allegations of major irregularities, including tampering with EVM buttons and disruptions during polling, which the Commission said had vitiated the electoral process.
The decision carries significant political importance because Falta falls under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, previously considered a major TMC stronghold.
