The local police station chief in Bihar’s Begusarai district has been suspended for negligence following the brutal gang-rape and torture of a 30-year-old woman. Deputy Inspector General Shailesh Kumar ordered the suspension following public outrage and allegations of police inaction in the case. An FIR was registered on June 13, two days after the assault, but local police allegedly failed to take any immediate action. Read Full Story The survivor said in her complaint that she stepped outside her home to use the toilet on the night of June 11 when five men approached, overpowered her, and dragged her to a secluded area.
The men tied her hands and feet, assaulted her, and took turns raping her, according to her complaint. She further alleged that the attackers used a sharp object to inflict injuries all over her body before abandoning her. Family members rushed the woman to a local hospital, where she was treated and discharged on June 12. However, she returned to the district hospital on June 17 after suffering from continuous, severe pain. During an advanced medical examination and ultrasound, doctors recovered a cartridge-like object, a stone, and a piece of wood from inside her body, according to hospital and police officials.
"An FIR (First Information Report) has been registered and a medical examination of the woman has been conducted by a medical board," DIG Kumar said after visiting the survivor at the district hospital. He added that police are still awaiting the medical report. "A special investigation team has been formed to arrest the accused," Kumar added. The survivor's husband told reporters that he was locked inside a room during the attack and was unable to help his wife. He said five men from their village carried out the assault. The family has named three of the suspects as Ram Babu Nishad, Suraj Kumar, and Nitish Kumar.
The other two suspects remain unidentified. According to the husband, the suspects are known local criminals with past involvements in theft and other offences. He also claimed that several men entered their home in March in an attempted sexual assault on his wife. When that attempt failed, the men allegedly thrashed the family and looted the home. Though a police case was registered for the March incident, the husband alleged that the suspects secured bail and targeted his wife again because local police failed to take effective action. Police officials have yet to address these allegations. Ends
