A man wanted in connection with a robbery at a businessman's house in Hapur earlier this month was killed in an encounter with police, officials said on Friday. Police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest. The accused, identified as Shyam, 25, a resident of Rampur district, was allegedly involved in the June 1 robbery in which a businessman’s family and a watchman were held hostage.
Police said the robbers fled with 1.25 kg of gold jewellery, cash, a motorcycle and mobile phones. Read Full Story Superintendent of Police Kunwar Gyananjay Singh said the encounter took place during a checking drive on Bulandshahr Road late on Thursday night. According to him, a motorcyclist tried to flee after seeing the police. The police chased him and later put up a blockade near Godi village. Singh said that after being cornered, the man took cover behind a tubewell and opened fire at the police.
The police then fired in self-defence. He suffered a serious gunshot injury and was taken to the community health centre in the city, where doctors declared him dead, the officer said. Police said Shyam was involved in the robbery at the businessman’s house in Girdharinagar under the Hapur Dehat police station area. Singh also said he faced charges of dacoity and violations of the Gangsters Act in Moradabad. An illegal pistol, live and spent cartridges, and a motorcycle were recovered from the spot, police said.
In sum, police said the man killed in the encounter was a wanted accused in the Hapur robbery case in which a businessman's family and a watchman were held hostage, and that he was shot after allegedly opening fire while trying to evade arrest. Ends
