A recent agreement between the United States and Iran, referred to as the Islamabad deal, aims to terminate ongoing conflicts in West Asia and maintain the territorial integrity of Lebanon. However, the agreement faces significant hurdles as Israel refuses to participate or accept the terms. The deal requires Iran to hand over highly enriched uranium, but it lacks provisions forcing the disarmament of proxy groups in the region.
Experts point out that the Israeli government views the agreement as a threat to its national security and continues military operations in Lebanon and other areas. The exclusion of clauses addressing regional proxy groups leaves Israeli security concerns unaddressed. Analysts suggest the conflict will persist as the Israeli leadership prioritises territorial control and domestic political survival over the new peace framework.
Meanwhile, upcoming negotiations in Geneva aim to further the agreement, though the continued military strikes indicate a fragile future for the proposed de-escalation in the region.
