The Cauvery water dispute continues as the Tamil Nadu assembly passed a resolution opposing the proposed Mekedatu dam project. The state government stated that access to water is a basic right for its people, noting that the dam could affect farmers in the delta region. The resolution urged the central government to withhold all clearances for the project.
The state governor supported this stance during an assembly address, mentioning the existing struggles to secure water shares. In response, the Karnataka government maintained that the reservoir is essential for securing drinking water and stated it will benefit both states. The neighbouring state expressed readiness for bilateral talks. Meanwhile, political parties in Tamil Nadu, including the DMK, TVK, and AIADMK, have united on the issue, proposing an all-party delegation to meet the Prime Minister in the national capital to formally submit a letter opposing the dam construction.
