The recent Karnataka Member of Legislative Council elections witnessed significant cross-voting, impacting the Democratic Alliance. According to the state leadership, several Members of the Legislative Assembly from both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (Secular) voted against their assigned candidates. Data indicates that the Janata Dal (Secular) received only fourteen votes despite having the support of twenty-two legislators, revealing a shortfall of eight votes.
Additionally, the Bharatiya Janata Party experienced a shortage of three votes for their candidate. In total, eleven legislators from the alliance reportedly cross-voted in favor of the Congress party. Because the election utilized a secret ballot system, identifying the specific individuals involved remains challenging. The state leadership has sought an appointment with the national party chief to discuss the situation.
Both alliance partners are currently analyzing the voting patterns to identify the legislators involved, and disciplinary action is expected against those who voted against the alliance candidates.
