Rapid Read Iran-Israel tensions escalated after Israeli strikes on Lebanon. (File/Reuters) Days after Israel and Iran signed a deal aimed at ending their war, Israel’s military said on Friday that its forces carried out strikes across southern Lebanon overnight, while Hezbollah reported heavy fighting in the region. The developments have raised concerns that the fragile agreement could be at risk. Lebanon’s state-run News Agency said at least 16 people were killed in the Israeli airstrikes, which the Israeli military stated were still ongoing.
Continued hostilities in Lebanon, observers warn, could jeopardise the recently signed deal that mandates an immediate halt to military operations “on all fronts, including in Lebanon," where Israel has been engaged in conflict with the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group, and also calls for safeguarding Lebanon’s “territorial integrity and sovereignty." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is expected to face elections later this year, has said he will not withdraw forces, insisting that Israeli troops will remain in Lebanon until the threat posed by Hezbollah is eliminated. The strikes coincided with planned talks in Switzerland between Iran and the United States on efforts to achieve a permanent end to the Iran war, which were later delayed.
On Thursday, US Vice President JD Vance postponed his visit to Switzerland, where he had been scheduled to lead the discussions. The White House cited logistical issues, although the decision followed a report by Al-Mayadeen, a pan-Arab satellite channel politically aligned with Hezbollah, which claimed Iran was delaying the dispatch of its delegation due to Israel’s ongoing military operations in Lebanon. US President Donald Trump signed the initial pact with Iran on Wednesday during a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles, and it came into effect immediately. In remarks made after the signing, Vance issued a sharp warning to Israel, stating that Trump was “the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time."
