NEET Re-Exam: Delhi HC Upholds 5-Day Telegram Ban To Prevent Paper Leaks Ahead Of NEET UG Retest
The Delhi High Court has upheld the Centre's decision to impose a five-day temporary ban on the Telegram application from June 17 to June 22
The Delhi High Court has upheld the Centre's decision to impose a five-day temporary ban on the Telegram application from June 17 to June 22. The ban comes ahead of the NEET UG re-examination scheduled for June 21. The central government argued that the temporary restriction is necessary to prevent potential paper leaks and the spread of misinformation, citing Telegram's architectural design which allows users to create accounts with fake names and alter message dates.
Telegram's legal representatives challenged the ban, arguing a non-application of mind and questioning the government's authority to block the entire application. However, the High Court rejected these arguments, stating that the Information Technology Act empowers the government to ban entire platforms during emergencies. The court ruled that the temporary ban is a proportionate and least restrictive measure to safeguard the careers of lakhs of students appearing for the NEET UG retest, confirming that the government followed due procedure and provided sufficient reasons for the emergency order.
