(Image/X) Times Square Firing: Several gunshots were fired in New York City’s Times Square on Thursday afternoon (local time), triggering panic among tourists and bystanders in one of the world’s busiest public spaces. The shooting incident took place around 3:40 pm local time near Broadway between West 44th and 45th streets,, after the parade for NBA champion New York Knicks had filled the streets of lower Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD). Officials said 10,000 police officers had been deployed to secure the event honouring the Knicks’ first championship team in 53 years.
Police said a dispute involving a large group of people broke out in the area, during which a 26-year-old man was slashed in the neck. A short time later, a 17-year-old boy allegedly opened fire on the same group. Videos from the scene appeared to show at least two people opening fire in a crowded intersection near a parked NYPD vehicle. Tourists, locals and visitors quickly ran for cover as the shots were fired. Cops chased the suspects shortly after the shooting. The NYPD said one juvenile suspect was arrested and a firearm was recovered. The shooting scare comes just days after another gun-related incident in Times Square during celebrations following the New York Knicks’ championship victory. On June 16, gunshots were reported near the intersection of 42nd Street and Broadway, sending hundreds of revellers running for safety. A 17-year-old boy was injured in that incident, while police later recovered a loaded firearm. Thursday’s shooting again caused panic in Times Square, with people running for safety after gunfire erupted in the crowded area, while police moved quickly to chase down a suspect and one person was taken to hospital.
