The Indian monsoon has slowed down in mid-June, leading to stagnation in its progress. Satellite images from the India Meteorological Department show a collapse in cloud cover across central and peninsula India. Consequently, several parts of the country, including Mumbai, are facing water shortages. Between June 4 and June 15, the country recorded a 64% rainfall deficit, which currently stands at a 40% deficit overall.
While weather experts attribute this temporary pause to unusual upper atmospheric winds disrupting rain-bearing circulation, the IMD forecasts a below-normal monsoon for this year, projecting rainfall at 90% of the long-term average. Regional deficits have reached 46% in northeast India and 63% in central India.
