A 50-year-old man was hacked to death with an axe allegedly by his son while he was sleeping on a charpoy around midnight in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district, with relatives saying that the accused frequently quarrelled with his father over his demand to be married, police said. After the attack, the accused, Golu Kanaujia, climbed onto the roof of the house and shouted that he had killed his father, Brahmdev Kanaujia.
Villagers rushed to the spot after hearing the commotion. Family members also told investigators that he had been receiving medical care during this period. According to local residents and police, Golu frequently quarrelled with his father over his demand to be married.
The issue had reportedly been a recurring source of tension between the two. The incident occurred nearly two months after the death of Golu's mother. Upon receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot, took the body into custody and sent it for post-mortem examination. The accused was detained and questioned, officials added. Gorakhnath Circle Officer Ravi Kumar Singh confirmed that the police received information late on Thursday that Golu had allegedly killed his father with an axe.
He said local police immediately reached the scene, took the accused into custody and initiated further legal proceedings. Police said a case had been registered under the relevant sections of law. Officials are examining family statements, questioning the accused and awaiting the post-mortem report while collecting other evidence related to the case. Ends
