The CID on Thursday visited the Kolkata home of a maternal aunt of former Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee as part of its investigation into a case linked to an alleged provocative remark made by him during the Assembly election campaign, sources said. A team from the state police's Criminal Investigation Department spent nearly an hour at the Harish Chatterjee Street residence of Banerjee's aunt, Rina Gayen, in the Kalighat area before leaving around 3 pm. The agency has not issued any official statement on the purpose or outcome of the visit.
Read Full Story According to sources, the visit was linked to a case registered over Banerjee's reported remark at an election rally. The remark has been alleged to be provocative and is under CID investigation. Sources said Gayen's daughter, Aditi, is associated with Banerjee's social media operations and is often seen with him at party programmes. Investigators were trying to find out whether she had any role in circulating campaign-related content connected to the case, they added. The house visited by the CID is around 250 metres from the Kalighat residence of Trinamool Congress chief and former chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
Abhishek Banerjee has already appeared before CID officials on multiple occasions in connection with separate investigations, including the alleged signature-forgery case involving Trinamool legislators and the present matter related to his campaign remarks. The development comes days after police conducted a late-night search at Banerjee's Kalighat residence while looking for his close aide Sumit Roy in another case. Reacting to Thursday's action, Trinamool Congress leader Upasana Chowdhury alleged that the BJP government was selectively targeting opposition leaders. She said remarks made by BJP leaders during the election campaign had not led to similar action and described the CID visit as an attempt to stifle opposition voices.
Overall, Thursday's visit marked the latest step in the CID's inquiry linked to Banerjee's election campaign remark. Ends
