Telegram has approached the Delhi High Court to challenge the Centre's restrictions imposed on the messaging app during the NEET re-exam window. The government banned the platform, alleging it was being misused to facilitate paper leak scams and share question papers. However, Telegram argued that the ban is arbitrary and legally flawed, stating it had already blocked channels flagged by authorities.
The platform emphasised that its 150 million users should not be penalised for the actions of a few individuals. The Delhi High Court questioned the government's use of emergency powers and whether due process was followed before restricting the app. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta defended the Centre's decision, claiming Telegram failed to take timely action against the flagged channels. Meanwhile, the opposition criticised the government's move, demanding systemic educational reforms instead of app bans.
The court has directed the Centre to file a detailed response justifying the restrictions under the Information Technology Act.
