Bihar Man Who Offered To Surrender In Facebook Live Dies After Encounter Published By, Last Updated: June 18, 2026, 14:15 IST Bharat Bhushan, 28, died after being shot in a two day Bhojpur police standoff, following Facebook Live videos, as STF retaliated when he allegedly fired at officers Image from the site (Credits: X) A 28-year-old man at the centre of a dramatic two-day standoff with police in Bihar’s Bhojpur district died on Wednesday after sustaining gunshot injuries during an encounter, hours after declaring in a Facebook Live broadcast that he was ready to lay down his weapon if his demands were addressed. Bharat Bhushan, a resident of Bilauti village, succumbed to his injuries at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). The confrontation, parts of which were livestreamed on social media, unfolded less than a day after police said he was mentally unwell and that efforts were underway to place him in a mental health facility for treatment.
According to Bhojpur Superintendent of Police Raj cited by the Indian Express, Shahpur police station received information on Tuesday morning about a man allegedly brandishing a pistol and firing in the air. Police personnel and members of the Special Task Force (STF) reached the spot and repeatedly appealed to him to surrender. However, officials said he continued to fire intermittently, posing a threat to security personnel and nearby residents, according to a report by the Indian Express. Police later stated that after visiting his residence, they found Bhushan to be “mentally unsound" and initiated the process of shifting him to a mental hospital. They also urged the public not to circulate what they described as misleading videos related to the case, reported the outlet. The situation escalated on Wednesday when STF personnel wearing bulletproof jackets attempted to move closer and cordon off the area. According to police, Bhushan opened fire at the team, prompting officers to retaliate.
He sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he later died, reported the outlet. Videos from the standoff showed Bhushan referring to himself as a “krantikari" (revolutionary) and claiming that individuals like him were often labelled “mad" or “anti-national". In another social media post, he alleged that the Bihar administration wanted to eliminate him and said specialised teams could be deployed against him in a “battle for society and the country". Footage from Tuesday showed Bhushan lying on a cot with a pistol in his hand while police personnel and family members tried to persuade him to surrender. A woman believed to be his mother was also seen attempting to calm him down. In one of his livestreams, Bhushan said, “Ye log pagal saabit karna chahte hain. Jab Bhagat Singh samaj aur desh ke liye lad rahe the, unko bhi pagal saabit kiya gaya tha" (These people want to prove me mad. When Bhagat Singh was fighting for society and the country, he too was declared mad).
