Why Shakira Impersonator ShakiBecca Could Face FIFA Legal Action Published By, Last Updated: June 18, 2026, 13:49 IST FIFA is reviewing tribute performer ShakiBecca over alleged unauthorised use of 2026 World Cup imagery and branding. Rapid Read Shakira (left) and Rebeca Maiellano (AP/IG/shakibecca) Colombian pop star Shakira’s lookalike is facing scrutiny with reports claiming that FIFA, football’s world governing authority, is reviewing one of her recent performances for the alleged unauthorised use of material linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Venezuelan performer, Rebeca Maiellano, better known as ShakiBecca, has built a career by paying tribute to Shakira. Now, she is at a center of controversy for using FIFA World Cup-related imagery, branding and references during a show inspired by “Dai Dai" – the marquee tournament’s official song performed by Shakira and Burna Boy. While no lawsuit or official sanction has been announced, the issue has garnered attention because of FIFA’s strict approach to protecting its intellectual property.
Who Is ShakiBecca? Maiellano has spent over two decades recreating Shakira’s signature style, voice and choreography. She began performing as a teenager in Venezuela, appearing in talent competitions where she impersonated the Grammy-winning singer. Over the years, the tribute act evolved into an international career, with ShakiBecca gaining recognition among fans for her close resemblance to the “Hips Don’t Lie" and “Waka Waka" singer. Her social media presence has also grown substantially with more than 650,000 followers across platforms. The performer though has maintained that she’s not affiliated to or connected to Shakira’s official team and presents her shows as tributes to the global music star. Her popularity has also been boosted by public interactions with Shakira. So Why Is FIFA Reviewing Her Performance? As per multiple reports, FIFA is assessing whether protected World Cup assets were used without authorisation during a performance linked to “Dai Dai“.
The concerns reportedly involve the use of official tournament imagery, trademarks and visual elements associated with the 2026 World Cup. FIFA closely guards its commercial rights, with tournament names, logos, mascots, promotional graphics and other official materials protected under intellectual property laws in multiple countries. The governing body keeps a close tab on unauthorised usage of its branding which may result in commercial benefit. The issue also gains significance because the World Cup is supported by major sponsorship agreements, broadcast contracts and licensing deals, making brand protection a key priority. Reports indicate that if the disputed material was used for commercial purposes, FIFA may potentially pursue legal action. FIFA is yet to publicly make any comments even though reports indicate the body is still evaluating whether any intellectual property rules were violated.
