'Freeze All Accounts': TMC Seeks Urgent HDFC Action Over Fears Of 'Financial Hijacking' By Rebels Reported By, Edited By Last Updated: June 18, 2026, 12:32 IST After a majority of its MLAs revolted, TMC leadership has grown increasingly concerned about retaining control over its multi-million rupee bank accounts. Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing an existential crisis in both Bengal and Delhi. (PTI) Trinamool Congress leader and former party treasurer Aroop Biswas wrote to an HDFC Bank branch in Kolkata, urging it to freeze the party’s bank accounts. The extraordinary move comes amid an unprecedented internal crisis within the Trinamool Congress, triggered by a sweeping rebellion that has shaken the party’s organisational structure. After a majority of its MLAs revolted, the party leadership has grown increasingly concerned about retaining control over its multi-million rupee bank accounts. In what appears to be an emergency measure, Aroop Biswas, despite no longer serving as the party’s treasurer, wrote to HDFC Bank claiming to hold the post and sought an immediate freeze on all operations in the party’s accounts.
After the party’s poor performance in the West Bengal Assembly elections, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee initiated an organisational overhaul, removing Biswas from the post after he lost the Tollygunge Assembly seat in south Kolkata on June 5. He was subsequently replaced by Subhashish Chakravarty. According to the letter, Aroop Biswas claimed that rival factions within the AITC were asserting themselves as the party’s legitimate office-bearers. He urged the bank to prevent any unauthorised operation of the party’s accounts, citing what he described as a “genuine and reasonable apprehension" that the rebel camp could attempt to gain control over the funds.
The communication also lays out the extent of the political split, stating that the leadership has the backing of only eight of the party’s 28 MPs and two of its 60 MLAs, while the remaining 20 MPs and 58 MLAs have aligned with the rebel faction. Seeking immediate intervention, Biswas requested the bank to maintain the status quo on the accounts and bar all debit transactions, fund transfers, encumbrances and any changes to the operational mandate until the leadership dispute is resolved.
