The Health Department has decided to remove 43 Civil Assistant Surgeons from service for prolonged absence from duty. In a statement on Wednesday (June 17, 2026), Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav said some of these doctors had been absent for nearly four years and had not responded to the show-cause notices served on them.
This is the second time in more than a month that the government has acted against absentee doctors. In May, 51 doctors working in teaching hospitals were removed from service. In the statement, the Minister said 118 doctors had been found absent from duty. Only nine joined duty after receiving show-cause notices. Of the 118, action was taken against 43, and 34 others submitted resignations after receiving notices.
The government would accept some of these resignations, the Minister said. Another 19 doctors submitted explanations saying they could not attend to their duties for personal reasons, and the requests of 13 others were being reviewed by the government. In line with the Andhra Pradesh Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1991, the government has appointed 11 officers to inquire into the matter.
Explanations would be sought from the doctors, and action taken on the basis of the inquiry reports, Director of Secondary Health K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu said.
