A West Bengal minister has proposed making a thirty-minute yoga session mandatory for students across all schools and colleges in the state. The minister stated that practicing yoga daily after morning prayers will help students maintain physical health, concentration, and mental peace. This proposal follows a recent mandate making the singing of Vande Mataram compulsory in educational institutions. The suggestion comes ahead of the Prime Minister's scheduled visit to Kolkata for International Yoga Day on June twenty-first.
The state government aims to promote yoga to the masses and highlight the country's contribution to the practice. However, the proposal has sparked a political controversy. A senior Congress leader criticized the move, comparing the practice of yoga to offering Namaz, and argued that if one faces objections, the other should too. The opposition leader also accused the ruling party of adding a religious colour to the upcoming harvest festival, which coincides with Bengali Day celebrations on June twentieth.
The higher education department is yet to issue an official notification regarding the yoga mandate.
