A West Bengal minister has requested the state's Chief Minister to make thirty minutes of daily yoga mandatory across all schools and colleges. The proposal suggests that students should practise yoga after their regular prayers to improve mental peace, physical health, and concentration. This request follows a recent mandate that made singing Vande Mataram compulsory in educational institutions. The push for mandatory yoga comes just ahead of the twelfth International Yoga Day celebrations in Kolkata, where the Prime Minister is scheduled to attend as the chief guest.
A news correspondent noted that the previous state government had not actively yoga over the last decade due to political differences. While the higher education department has yet to issue an official notification regarding the yoga proposal, there are questions about its implementation. The correspondent highlighted that the earlier Vande Mataram mandate faced opposition from minority educational institutions, raising the possibility of similar resistance to the proposed yoga requirement.
