The issue figured prominently during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France on Wednesday. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders expressed satisfaction over the pace of negotiations and directed officials to expedite efforts towards a balanced, mutually beneficial and commercially meaningful agreement. “The US Trade Representative, Mr. Jamieson Greer, will be visiting India next week in this connection," the MEA said in a statement.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said the two countries were “very close" to concluding the trade pact. “We had, in particular, some very good conversations with Prime Minister Modi, India. And we’re doing trade deals, we’re doing a lot of things, a lot of things are happening between the United States and India," he said. The US President also lauded PM Modi’s efforts to encourage investments in the United States, saying, “Prime Minister is building a lot in the United States. He’s spending a lot of money in the United States. So we appreciate that job." Earlier this week, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said Greer’s visit, scheduled for June 22-24, is expected to focus on finalising the framework for the interim agreement and discussing the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) under negotiation between the two countries. “USTR is coming on the evening of June 22nd. On 23-24 June, he will be engaging with our Minister for Commerce and Industry. We expect that discussions will be centred around giving final touches to the framework deal and also on the larger BTA that has been under discussion between the two sides," Agrawal said.
Greer’s visit comes at a time when India is engaging with the United States over proposed tariff measures under Section 301 proceedings while simultaneously working towards a wider bilateral trade framework. Agrawal said the proposed agreement is intended to address a broad range of trade-related issues. “As far as the trade deal is concerned, I think the trade deal covers the entire gamut of trade relationship between India and the US, so definitely whenever we finalise and sign the deal, I think they try to have clear answers on the 301 investigations," he said. Beyond trade, PM Modi and President Trump also reviewed progress under the India-US COMPACT initiative since their meeting in Washington in February 2025. They welcomed advancements in defence cooperation, strategic technologies, energy and trade, and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership for the benefit of both countries.
