A draft peace agreement between the United States and Iran has been signed, signalling a permanent end to the war across all fronts, including proxy conflicts involving Hezbollah and the Houthis. According to an Axios report, the deal includes significant concessions from the US, sparking criticism on Capitol Hill that Donald Trump may have settled for less. Key takeaways from the agreement include the lifting of the US naval blockade, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the removal of all US sanctions on Iran.
Additionally, Iran is set to regain access to 24 billion dollars in frozen assets and receive 300 billion dollars in war compensation financing. In return, Iran has committed to halting the production of nuclear weapons and maintaining the status quo on its nuclear programme. The White House has defended the agreement, stating it avoids an economic catastrophe over oil prices. A final deal is expected within sixty days following further discussions in Geneva.
