Speaking to reporters in Mumbai over the steep increase in petrol and diesel rates, Raut said the hike was expected given the current economic situation. “What’s new in it? This was bound to happen… if you are a BJP supporter, just chant ‘Jai Shri Ram,’ and the price will drop by Rs 10.

In Delhi, petrol prices increased by 87 paise from Rs 97.77 to Rs 98.64 per litre, while diesel prices rose by 91 paise from Rs 90.67 to Rs 91.58 per litre. This marks the second hike in less than a week after oil marketing companies increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs 3 per litre each on May 15.
The latest revision comes as Brent crude prices continue to remain above USD 100 per barrel amid supply concerns triggered by the ongoing West Asia conflict. Oil marketing companies were reportedly incurring losses of more than Rs 1,000 crore per day before the recent fuel price hikes. Several Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, K. C. Venugopal and Shaktisinh Gohil, also criticised the Centre over the increase in fuel prices, saying it would further burden common people already struggling with inflation. Rahul Gandhi warned of what he described as an “economic storm" and accused the Centre of failing to shield citizens from rising prices. “Petrol prices are set to rise and inflation will skyrocket," he said, while questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his foreign visits amid the economic situation. Kharge alleged that the Modi government had failed on the economic front and accused it of shifting the burden of its policies onto the public. In a post on X, he said prices of petrol, diesel and LPG were rising rapidly and warned that fertiliser prices could also increase in the coming days.
Venugopal claimed the government was increasing fuel prices “in instalments" and said there was no clarity on how much more the common public would have to bear in the coming weeks.
