Rapid Read US President Donald Trump. (Reuters File) US President Donald Trump and Iranian officials confirmed that a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the West Asia conflict has been signed, marking a major diplomatic breakthrough after more than three months of war. Speaking to reporters as he departed the Palace of Versailles following the G7 summit in France, Trump said the agreement had been formally signed. “It’s signed," Trump said, adding, “Signed it in Versailles, I just signed it." Iran also announced that the memorandum had been finalised. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the agreement became official after both sides completed a digital signing process. “It was agreed that the Iran-US memorandum of understanding would be signed digitally," Baqaei told state broadcaster IRIB, adding, “The Iran-US memorandum is now officially finalized because both sides have signed it." The announcement means a formal signing ceremony previously expected to take place in Geneva on Friday will no longer be necessary, although Iranian officials said talks in Switzerland remain on schedule.
In comments carried by state news agency IRNA, Baqaei said the document had now entered its implementation phase. “The text of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was finalised with the signatures of the presidents- now it is time to test the implementation of the agreement," he said. The memorandum, formally titled the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, was first announced by Trump on Sunday and is intended to end a conflict that has lasted approximately 110 days since US and Israeli strikes against Iran began on February 28. According to details released by US officials earlier, the agreement calls for the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. Under its terms, the United States agreed to lift its naval blockade of Iran within 30 days, with commercial shipping expected to gradually return to pre-war levels. The document also states that US forces will withdraw from the vicinity of Iran within 30 days after a final agreement is concluded.
Iran, meanwhile, committed to facilitating the safe passage of commercial vessels and ensuring that no transit charges are imposed for a 60-day period. The memorandum establishes a framework for future negotiations, with both countries given 60 days to negotiate the terms of a comprehensive final settlement. Iranian parliamentary speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf described the memorandum as evidence of what he called “America’s failure" and said discussions with Washington would continue. “The people will see it and judge for themselves," Ghalibaf said in an interview with Iranian state television. He added that the Strait of Hormuz featured prominently in the negotiations and said provisions governing passage through the strategic waterway had been incorporated into the agreement. “Payment of service fees for passage through the Strait of Hormuz has been formalized in the memorandum of understanding," he said.
