(Image: X/@AmitShah) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday urged residents of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar not to be “misled" by people associated with Maoist ideology, asserting that elected governments at the Centre, state and local levels are committed to ensuring the region’s development after the eradication of Naxalism. Addressing a press conference after the 26th meeting of the Central Zonal Council, the Union Home Minister said Left Wing Extremism (LWE) had been eliminated from the country ahead of the March 31, 2026, deadline due to the “valour, courage and supreme sacrifice of the security forces," PTI reported.
Shah said Bastar, once considered the country’s worst Naxal-affected region, would be transformed into India’s “best" tribal region by 2031. “I want to caution Bastarwasis (residents of Bastar) that those with Maoist ideology, who destroyed Bastar for 50 years with the gun, will come to provoke you by changing their names, appearance and talks but you should not get misled by them," Shah said. “The governments elected by you, whether at the level of panchayat, state or at the Centre, will work to ensure your development as India is Naxal-free after March 2026," he added. The BJP leader said the Centre and the Vishnu Deo Sai government were preparing a five-year roadmap focused on welfare saturation, livelihoods and skill development for tribal communities.
Shah also announced that nearly one-third of the 200 security camps established in Bastar would be converted into ‘Shaheed Veer Gundadhur Seva Dera’ public service centres. He outlined plans to promote dairy farming, cooperative marketing of forest produce and tribal cultural initiatives such as the ‘Bastar Pandum’. He added that two editions of the Bastar Olympics had already been held, drawing participation from 3.94 lakh players, including rehabilitated former Naxals.
