MDMK general secretary Vaiko, on Wednesday, called on Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat in Chennai and presented him with a detailed memorandum urging the government not to grant permission for a private copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi district. Speaking to journalists, Mr. Vaiko said “I have presented a detailed memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking the rejection of any proposal, permission, licence, or approval sought by Vedanta Limited / Sterlite Copper for establishing or reviving a copper smelting plant anywhere in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Thoothukudi district.” He also said that he had invited Mr. Vijay to attend the release of a si volume book on his 30 years in Parliament in New Delhi on August 4.
To a question on whether the MDMK would join the TVK alliance, Mr. Vaiko said only the party’s general council would take a decision. A delegation from NASSCOM, including its president Rajesh Nambiar, vice-president Srikant Srinivasan, director Udaya Shankar, and South Regional Director Bhaskar Kumar Varma, called on Mr. Vijay. A delegation from Cognizant Technology Solutions, including Chairman and Managing Director Rajesh Varrier, Board Member for India and General Counsel T.
Narayanan, Head of Corporate Affairs for India Gaurav Hazra, Tamil Nadu Head Archana Ramkumar, and Head of Government Affairs for the State K. Purushothaman, also
met the Chief Minister.
