Afghanistan’s decision to bowl first under the scorching afternoon heat backfired, as Gill and Ishan Kishan, the latter scoring his second ODI hundred since returning, powered India to a commanding total of 402.
The conditions remained demanding throughout the game, with multiple cricketers suffering from cramps in the intense heat. Gill even batted with an ice collar to cope with the conditions and he didn’t return to the field after being dismissed. “Yes, I was, but I knew that I would have to keep hitting my shots, keep 430, 440, 450 in mind. Honestly, in a pretty good space. The ball is going exactly where I want it to go and I am feeling very confident from the first ball," Gill said at the post-match presentation. “Even in this match, in the series actually, I had a target for myself that I want to be there, finish matches and bat till 40-45 overs and build that habit.
Whenever I get a start, I want to convert those into big ones," Gill added. Gill and Kishan dismantled the visiting attack with a blistering 224-run partnership for the third wicket off just 141 balls, seizing complete control of the game and putting the opposition on the back foot. “A little sore, got a lot of cramps when I went out, but it was really hot and batted for almost 40-45 overs, so the body was getting a lot of cramps in different areas of the body, but it is much better now," Gill said.
