Soon, applicants, including domestic, commercial, and farmers seeking new electricity connections, will have to obtain Aadhaar e-KYC authentication along with furnishing other documents for identity and address proof. Following a request from Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom), the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has issued an order stating, “Every applicant seeking a service relating to the supply of electricity shall furnish the Aadhaar number with Aadhaar e-KYC authentication in accordance with the applicable provisions of law and the notifications issued by the Central Government and the Government of Karnataka from time to time.” A senior official from Bescom said, “This is being done to verify the identity and address of the applicant.
It is mandatory for all types of consumers. Once the applicant furnishes his/her Aadhaar number, an OTP will be sent to their mobile number. When
the OTP is entered, it verifies the identity of the person electronically.”
