Struck By Internal Revolt, TMC's Abhishek Jets To Delhi Friday To Meet Om Birla Published By, Last Updated: June 17, 2026, 19:11 IST Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to meet TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on June 19 over rebel MP's merger claims and recognition of a separate parliamentary group. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has asked TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee to meet him on June 19 after he urged him not to recognise any other bloc as the Trinamool Congress. The hearing comes after rebel TMC leaders sought recognition as a separate parliamentary group after their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
On Sunday, a letter dated June 10, Banerjee had requested the Speaker not to accord any recognition, status or facility to any group claiming to be a separate faction of the party. The letter was submitted by TMC MPs Sagarika Ghose and Kirti Azad at Birla’s residence. PTI quoted Banerjee saying in the letter that his submission be placed on record that the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) be treated as a single political party represented in the House only through its duly authorised leader and whip, and that the party be given an opportunity to present its case before any decision is taken on any communication from dissident MPs.
“Treat the AITC as a single political party represented in the House solely through its duly authorised Leader and Whip, and decline to accord any recognition, status, or facility to any purported separate group or faction of the AITC," he said. The TMC leader also pointed out that any merger claim will need both a merger of the political party and the support of two-thirds of legislators. “Afford the AITC an opportunity of being heard before any decision is taken on any communication of the nature referred to above, should the same be received," he added. This comes as the rebel claim has maintained that it has the backing of a majority of the party’s parliamentary strength.
