The US has reverted the name of the Indo-Pacific Command to the US Pacific Command (PACOM) during President Donald Trump's second tenure. The announcement comes just hours before a scheduled meeting between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Analysts suggest the move is an accommodation of China's interests, as Beijing was previously concerned about the focus on the Indian Ocean.
The timing of the announcement has raised questions about the future of the Quad and the US rebalance towards the Indo-Pacific region. Indian Ambassador to Italy Rajiv Dogra and Dr Harinder Sekhon from the Vivekananda International Foundation discussed the implications of this decision. They noted that the US has been sending strong signals ahead of bilateral meetings, recalling the announcement of tariffs just before a leadership meeting in February.
The panel also highlighted concerns over US actions in the Gulf and its relationship with Pakistan, indicating a shift in US foreign policy that could impact India's strategic interests.
