(Image: AFP) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the four-month-long war in West Asia resulted in disruption in the supply of fuel, fertiliser and food while pointing out that the conflict’s impact will continue in the Global South. Addressing the G7 outreach summit in Evian, PM Modi said, “The disruptions in fuel, fertiliser and food supply chains caused by the crisis in West Asia will continue to impact the Global South for a considerable period." He also urged international financial institutions to help the “most vulnerable countries" as they “should not be left to bear the burden of crises alone".

This comes hours ahead of PM Modi’s key meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit. The discussions will likely be focused on trade negotiations and recent tensions in West Asia. The meeting comes just days after three Indian sailors were killed in US military strikes on commercial vessels near Oman, an incident that prompted strong protests from New Delhi.
The issue is likely to feature prominently in the talks, along with the proposed US-Iran agreement and the future of the Strait of Hormuz. On Tuesday, the two leaders briefly interacted during a gathering of G7 leaders, their first face-to-face meeting in 16 months. The United States and Iran signed the framework deal on Sunday, setting the stage for further negotiations aimed at securing a broader peace agreement. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is seen as a significant element of the framework, given the waterway’s importance to global energy supplies and international shipping. The peace agreement will be signed in person at the Burgenstock Resort near Lucerne in Switzerland on Friday.
