The Mahila Court in Coimbatore on Wednesday (June 17, 2026) sentenced a man from Pollachi to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a woman with a mental disability and getting her pregnant in 2021. Judge V. Sundararaj awarded the punishment to G. Balasubramanian, 44. As per the prosecution, Balasubramanian had been undertaking wall painting and related works in his locality.
He sexually assaulted the woman while undertaking painting works in her house. The incident came to light after the survivor was found to be pregnant. A case was registered at the All Women Police Station, Pollachi, after the survivor narrated the ordeal to her mother, who was taking care of her.
B. Jisha, who appeared for the prosecution, said the sexual assault by the convict was proved through DNA testing on him and the foetus. The court found Balasubramanian guilty of offences under Sections 376 2 (l) (commits rape on a woman suffering from mental or physical disability) and (n) (commits rape repeatedly on the same woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
The court also slapped a fine of โน1,000 on him, besides the punishment. The court ordered the District Legal Services Authority to provide appropriate compensation to the survivor.
