Suvendu Adhikari Plans MLA Offices Across Bhabanipur, Leaves Out Ward No. 77: Here’s Why Reported By, Last Updated: May 20, 2026, 08:44 IST During campaigning, Adhikari had predicted that he would defeat Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur Assembly’s Wards No. 63, 71, 72, 73, 74 and 82, but would trail in Ward No. 77. Rapid Read West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari. (PTI/File) The Bharatiya Janata Party’s stunning victory in Bhabanipur has turned some neighbourhoods inside the constituency into high-voltage political zones, but few carry as much symbolism for the BJP as Ward No. 77. On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that MLA offices would be opened across all seven wards of the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, with a dedicated phone number and email ID provided to constituents to help them reach Adhikari with their problems.

But this facility will not be extended to Ward No. 77. “A dedicated MLA office will be opened in every ward of Bhabanipur. Alongside this, a specific phone number and email ID will also be launched. For any need or any problem you face, you will have a designated representative by your side round the clock to help resolve it," Bhabanipur’s MLA, who is Bengal’s new Chief Minister, told his constituents on Monday. But what is it about Ward No. 77? Sources suggest the ward is Muslim-dominated and overwhelmingly supported Mamata Banerjee. During campaigning, a confident Adhikari had predicted that he would defeat Banerjee in Bhabanipur Assembly’s Wards No. 63, 71, 72, 73, 74 and 82, but would trail in Ward No. 77. On May 4, Banerjee swept Ward No. 77, sources said. However, Adhikari’s massive lead in the other wards helped him defeat the former Chief Minister of Bengal by 15,105 votes on her home turf.

Soon after the win, encircled by party cadres and sporting a saffron tilak, Adhikari spoke about Ward No. 77. “This was very important. Defeating Mamata Banerjee was crucial. This is Mamata Banerjee’s retirement from politics… This time, too, she lost by over 15,000 votes. Muslims voted for her openly. In Ward No. 77, all the Muslims who came out to vote voted for Mamata, and Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists blessed me and made me win," he said. He called it a “victory for Hindutva". Areas like Bhabanipur, parts of Harish Mukherjee Road, parts of Ashutosh Mukherjee Road, Motilal Nehru Road and the surrounding pockets fall under it. Drainage and the eviction of hawkers have been long-standing issues, with the latter being politically sensitive in the ward and often leading to traffic congestion. Now, it remains to be seen whether residents of a ward in Bengal’s most VIP constituency reach out to their MLA or keep their distance from him while standing by their former MLA.
