‘Love You, Mummy, Papa…’: NEET Aspirant Dies By Suicide In Dehradun, Leaves Heartbreaking Note Published By, Last Updated: June 17, 2026, 13:53 IST Riya Kumari Thapa, a NEET-UG aspirant and daughter of a Kargil War veteran, died by suicide in Dehradun. Ahead of NEET retest, 23-year-old aspirant, Riya Kumari Thapa, died by suicide in Dehradun. In yet another case, a 23-year-old woman, preparing for NEET-UG retest, allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun. The deceased, identified as Riya Kumari Thapa, was the daughter of a Kargil War veteran who served during the 1999 conflict. According to police, the incident came to light on Tuesday when Riya did not respond after her mother went to call her for lunch.
When she failed to open the door, her mother alerted her father. The family then forced open the room and found her hanging. Police were informed and later recovered a suicide note from the room. “I love you, Mummy, Papa. No one is at fault," she allegedly wrote in Hindi. What suicide note says? Senior police officer Ankit Kandari said Thapa usually studied late at night and therefore often woke up late in the day. “In the note, the woman expressed affection for her father and said no one was to be blamed for her death, attributing the decision to her own perceived incompetence," Kandari told reporters. Police said the contents of the note suggested that she had been struggling with feelings of inadequacy.
Preparing for NEET Retest According to Kandari, frustration over not achieving success in her studies appears to have been the main reason behind the extreme step. Thapa had been preparing for the Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) re-examination scheduled for June 21. She had reportedly been unable to clear the medical entrance examination in her first attempt. A bright student, Thapa had topped her school after scoring 97 per cent marks in Class 12. Police are continuing with the formal investigation into the incident.
