US Drops 'Indo' From Pacific Command In Major Rebranding; 'Deep Historic Roots' Published By Last Updated: June 17, 2026, 10:25 IST United States restores US Pacific Command name, dropping INDO from US Indo-Pacific Command, citing historic roots and honoring USPACOM's 'historic roots' in the region. US changed the name of its pacific command, dropping 'INDO' from it. (Representational image) Honouring its ‘deep historic roots’, the United States has announced that it will be dropping ‘INDO’ from the name of its oldest and largest unified command – the US Pacific Command, which was until now the ‘US Indo-Pacific Command’. America’s Department of War, which itself used to be called ‘Department of Defense’, announced this development today (as per Indian Standard Time). This is in fact a restoration of its earlier name. From the earlier acronym of USINDOPASCOM, it will now be called ‘USPASCOM’.
“Restoring the legacy USPACOM designation honors the command’s deep historical roots, fostering a sense of pride and collective spirit among all who serve in the Pacific," said the command in a tweet posted on X. History Of The US Pacific Command The 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, established the command on January 1, 1947. For 70 years, the command operated with the name – USPASCOM. The command was named the ‘US Indo-Pacific Command’ in the year 2018 “in recognition of the growing security role that India is playing in the region", ABC News reported at the time. It is the oldest and largest unified combatant command of the US armed forces, according to the tweet. “From its critical role in establishing the post-WWII regional security architecture to its coordination of joint forces during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and countless humanitarian operations, the USPACOM namesake carries decades of military heritage and enduring regional partnerships," the tweet posted by the command today said.
What Is USPASCOM Responsible For? The US Pacific Command is responsible for a vast region from the Western coast of the America itself to the Western border of India. There has been no change in the responsibility of the command, the department said. “The command’s fundamental mission and its unwavering commitment to maintaining a free and open theater alongside regional allies and partners are unchanged," it added. When the name of the US Pacific Command was changed to include ‘Indo’ in it, reports said it was to account for the growing military role of India in the region. The ABC News report quoting an official, back in 2018, had said “the U.S. wants to work more with India to help that nation expand its relationships in the region, that includes plans for new maritime security exercises." This restoration of the old name comes at a time when the US has just agreed on a major peace deal with Iran to end the months-long war there that disrupted global oil supply.
