At the recent G7 Summit, the Indian Prime Minister addressed global leaders, emphasizing the critical need for peace in West Asia and highlighting the severe impact of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz on the global economy. The Indian Prime Minister mourned the loss of three Indian civilian sailors who died during recent attacks on commercial vessels and stressed that maritime security and protecting seafarers are shared global responsibilities.
The address also pointed to a prevailing trust deficit in the current geopolitical climate. The remarks follow a series of incidents in June where multiple commercial tankers were caught in the crossfire of strikes by United States forces in the region. While most Indian crew members aboard these vessels were safely evacuated, the casualties prompted strong protests from the Indian External Affairs Minister. The Indian Prime Minister reiterated the necessity of keeping shipping routes open and ensuring the unhindered free flow of global trade.
