Russian Warship Fires Warning Shots Near UK Yacht In English Channel: All You Need To Know Published By, Last Updated: June 17, 2026, 05:23 IST According to the Russian defense ministry, the crew of the frigate observed the yacht sailing on what it described as a "dangerous course". The ministry said Russian sailors made several attempts to contact the yacht's crew by radio but received no response. A Russian warship fired warning shots in front of a UK-flagged yacht in the English Channel after the civilian vessel appeared to be on a potential collision course, according to Russia’s defense ministry. The incident occurred on Tuesday around 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of the Isle of Wight, outside British territorial waters, and involved the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich and a sailing yacht identified as Bright Future.
According to the Russian defense ministry, the crew of the frigate observed the yacht sailing on what it described as a “dangerous course" that would bring it into close proximity with the warship. The ministry said Russian sailors made several attempts to contact the yacht’s crew by radio but received no response. After the vessel continued on its course, the warship launched signal flares in an effort to attract attention. When the yacht reportedly closed to within approximately 150 meters of the frigate, the commander of the Admiral Grigorovich ordered warning shots to be fired along the sailboat’s projected course using small arms, the ministry said. The yacht subsequently altered its course and moved away from the Russian vessel. “The crew of the frigate Admiral Grigorovich acted in strict accordance with international maritime regulations and took all necessary measures to prevent an incident," Russia’s defense ministry said in a statement.
No injuries or damage were reported aboard the yacht, which continued its journey following the encounter. The UK’s Ministry of Defence confirmed the incident and said the warning shots were not directed at the yacht itself but were intended to prevent a possible collision. A British defence spokesperson said the Russian vessel was being monitored by Royal Navy patrol ship HMS Mersey at the time. The spokesperson added that the incident occurred in international waters and that British authorities were aware of the situation as it unfolded. Russian naval vessels routinely transit the English Channel, one of the world’s busiest maritime routes, and are regularly tracked by British military authorities. The incident comes just days after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that British forces had intercepted an oil tanker linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet" in the English Channel.
