Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy on Tuesday threatened to move a privilege motion against Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar — who heads the dissident TMC faction that merged with the Nationalist Citizen Party of India this week — for breaking the Parliamentary norm of not divulging the proceedings of a Parliamentary standing committee. At the conclusion of the Standing Committee on Home Affairs that was deliberating on crimes against children, Ms. Dastidar spoke to the media criticising her former party’s 15-year government in the State for its failure to check child trafficking and other crimes against children.
“In West Bengal, child marriage is very prevalent, and the previous government did not take adequate steps to stop it. Child trafficking is also very high there, with young girls being sent outside the country,” she said. She added that she had asked officials of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs what action would be taken on the issue and also what punishment would be fixed for those involved in either child abuse or child marriage.
Roy, who has been a Parliamentarian since 1977, accused Ms. Dastidar of being oblivious about Parliamentary rules. “Surprised that a four-time MP who has now claimed to have merged with
a cock and bull party is unaware of parliamentary procedures. Divulging details of a Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting is grounds for a privilege motion against the member,” Mr. Roy said.
