The Government of India, including the Ministry of Information Technology and the Testing Agency, has invoked Section 69A of the IT Act to restrict the use of Telegram in India until June 22, a day after the NEET examination. Additionally, the platform's editing feature has been disabled until June 30. This action aims to prevent scammers and the paper leak mafia from spreading fake NEET question papers.
Cyber expert Mohit Yadav explained that Telegram is frequently used by fraudsters because it allows users to log in with virtual numbers without valid ID authentication. Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram's strong privacy features and lack of a dedicated law enforcement data-sharing team make it difficult for authorities to track anonymous users. Scammers exploit the editing feature to alter messages without changing the original timestamp, creating a false impression that they possessed the exam paper beforehand.
The government is actively monitoring Telegram channels, and central forces and the army have been deployed for the upcoming NEET examination to ensure security.
