Driver Shortage & Infrastructure Woes Trigger Logistics Crisis At India's Largest Port
An India Today ground report from Nhava Sheva assesses the impact of the West Asia crisis on logistics and business at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port
An India Today ground report from Nhava Sheva assesses the impact of the West Asia crisis on logistics and business at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. The port faced a massive backlog of forty thousand containers in mid-May due to a severe shortage of drivers and movers, which has now reduced to twenty-four thousand. Despite an expected increase in container volume to one crore this year, the logistics sector is struggling with inadequate infrastructure.
Basic operations, such as moving containers from parking plazas to central freight stations, are taking up to eight hours instead of two. Furthermore, long-distance travel times have tripled due to traffic bottlenecks, particularly in Thane. The crisis is exacerbated by a thirty percent shortfall in drivers, who are deterred by poor working conditions and a lack of basic amenities during long traffic jams.
Consequently, logistics companies are incurring heavy financial losses, with some contemplating exiting the business if infrastructure and operational efficiencies do not improve soon.
