Palace of Versailles in Versailles near Paris (Image: Reuters File) US President Donald Trump, who has many times likened himself to a “king", on Tuesday accepted French President Emmanuel Macron’s invite for dinner at Versailles as the palace of the Sun King Louis XIV is “the real deal". “The French president, who happens to be a very nice man, invited me to dinner at Versailles," Trump said on the sidelines of the G7 summit in the French lakeside resort of Evian. According to AFP, Macron has planned a one-on-one dinner with the mercurial US leader at the Palace of Versailles near Paris on Wednesday after the summit concludes.
Check for Live Updates The palace, which was the residence of French kings from the time of Louis XIV to Louis XVI, regularly hosts heads of state and foreign dignitaries. In 2021, Macron hosted King Charles III and Queen Camilla here for the palace’s 400th anniversary. Fortune quoted Macron’s office saying previously that the French president will host Trump for a dinner Wednesday to mark the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, at the Palace of Versailles, “a historic symbol of Franco-American friendship". Trump, who has often likened himself to a “king", has acknowledged the dinner would delay his return home. “Versailles is not gold leaf. It’s the real deal. And I said, I’d like to do it," he said.
“All it means is that I get home later in the evening, meaning early in the morning. And I’m not a big sleeper anyway." The US President also assured that he would be early in the Oval Office and said, “I won’t lose any time". According to AFP, the French president, hosting what is his final G7 summit before the end of his term next year, has insisted the evening at Versailles will not be a “gala" dinner. Meanwhile, the invite has been criticised by some French political leaders who accused Macron of rolling out the red carpet for Trump. AFP quoted hard-left lawmaker Mathilde Panot said Trump had insulted France and Europe on multiple occasions, adding that Macron “could have found a better way to end his term than to invite a supremacist president with such pomp".
“Flattery does not work," Panot said.
