The accused had been associated with the temple for several years. (Representative image) A 70-year-old temple trustee was allegedly beaten to death by a watchman after the latter was confronted over consuming alcohol within the shrine premises in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore on Tuesday, police said. The accused has been identified as Mukesh Sharma and has been taken into custody. The video capturing the assault has surfaced on social media. The footage shows Sharma striking the elderly trustee, identified as Kailash Modi, with a stick around 35 times. According to Gopal Yadav, SHO, Annapurna Police Station, the incident occurred around 6 am on Tuesday.

This has led to numerous altercations and even physical altercations between him and Kailash Modi, the deceased, who is also the temple’s trustee and president. A criminal case had already been registered in this regard last year, and the tension has continued unabated…this morning, when Modi arrived at the temple, he met him.
A quarrel arose…during the altercation, he went ahead and beat Modi to death with a stick at the Gurudwara…he has been rounded up…effective action has been taken against him…" Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Amarendra Singh said that Sharma, employed as a watchman at a temple under the Annapurna police station limits, was allegedly intoxicated while on duty, PTI reported. According to the officer, the trustee arrived at the temple and objected to Sharma’s condition, attempting to counsel him over his conduct. The reprimand allegedly angered the watchman, who then attacked Modi with a stick. The trustee succumbed to his injuries, the ADCP said. He further stated that Sharma had been associated with the temple for several years and that the management had previously received complaints alleging he frequently reported for duty under the influence of alcohol.
