China Ranks As Germany's Top Investor, Overtakes US In Foreign Projects Published By, Last Updated: May 22, 2026, 18:06 IST China becomes top source of FDI projects in Germany, overtaking US, as total projects fall for 4th year, GTAI cites tariffs and uncertainty, US firms see Germany as less attractive China ranks top in investing in Germany (AI generated image for representation) China has overtaken the United States to become the biggest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in Germany, according to a report by Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI). Chinese firms launched 228 greenfield and expansion projects in Germany in 2025, ahead of 206 projects by US companies, the report said. Switzerland, the UK and the Netherlands completed the top five list.

Germany recorded a total of 1,564 foreign investment projects last year, down 9.3% from the previous year, marking the fourth straight annual decline. The European Union accounted for 33% of the total FDI projects in the country. “International uncertainties such as tariffs and trade conflicts mean that companies are more cautious at present about investment decisions," GTAI managing director Achim Hartig said, while adding that the decline seen in Germany was moderate by European standards and that the country remained a “robust business location," reported South China Morning Post. GTAI managing director Achim Hartig said rising tariffs, trade tensions and global uncertainty had made companies more cautious about investments. He, however, said Germany remained a stable business destination despite the slowdown.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had earlier urged Chinese companies to increase investments in Germany, especially in sectors such as automobiles, machinery, chemicals, energy and electric mobility. “We want Chinese investment in Germany. We want jobs in Germany through Chinese investment," he said while attending a business forum with Premier Li Qiang. Challenges Faced By US In Investing In Germany Worsening ties between Europe and the US, along with Germany’s high energy costs and other structural problems, are making American companies rethink investments in the country. A November report by the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany said only 27% of US firms considered Germany an attractive business destination. Companies cited high energy and labour costs, the need for economic and industrial policy reforms, and weak digital infrastructure as key concerns.

The report also said nearly 70% of US companies operating in Germany felt geopolitical changes were negatively affecting their business strategy.
