A fresh political storm is brewing in Maharashtra. Speculation over a possible split within Shiv Sena (UBT) has intensified after party MP Sanjay Deshmukh skipped a key meeting called by Uddhav Thackeray and later met Union Minister and Shiv Sena leader Prataprao Jadhav in Delhi. The development has given fresh ammunition to the Eknath Shinde camp, which claims several MPs and MLAs from the Uddhav faction are in touch with them.
Shinde faction leader Kripal Tumane has revived talk of the much-discussed "Operation Tiger", claiming that 7 MPs and 16 MLAs are in contact with his camp ahead of the Monsoon Session. The Opposition alleges the BJP is attempting to engineer splits in regional parties to secure support for key legislation in Parliament.
BJP leaders, however, reject the charge, saying rival parties should focus on their internal issues rather than blame others. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) has dismissed all rumours of defection and insists its MPs and MLAs remain united. Uddhav Thackeray has also called a meeting of party legislators to consolidate support as political temperatures rise.
