The Tamil Nadu government, led by the TVK, has released a white paper on the state's finances, revealing an economic challenge. According to the state's Finance Minister, the revenue deficit has surged to over 78,000 crore rupees for the year 2025-2026, and the overall debt has nearly doubled in the last five years to 10 lakh crore rupees. The white paper highlights that a substantial portion of the state's income is being used to pay interest on previous loans.
The report compares Tamil Nadu's fiscal discipline with states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. The findings suggest that the state's financial condition may force the TVK government to pause or delay the implementation of promised welfare schemes, including financial assistance for women and youth, free gold, and subsidised gas cylinders. The TVK has attributed the current financial situation to the previous DMK administration, indicating that addressing the debt and revenue deficit will be a priority before rolling out new policies.
