The date May 12 will forever haunt Twisha Sharma’s family. It was on this date a year ago that they met Samarth Singh for the first time. Gathered in their Noida flat for a small roka ceremony, the family dreamed of a happy married life for their daughter. Exactly a year later – on May 12, 2026 – the dream turned into a nightmare outside a mortuary in Bhopal. Equally haunting is the date May 15, the day their daughter was supposed to fly back home from Bhopal, escaping a life of alleged dowry harassment, and physical as well as emotional torture. But Twisha never made the flight. It was her parents instead who flew to Bhopal after learning of their daughter’s death. Twisha, 33, was found dead on the night of May 12 at her marital home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area. Her husband, advocate Samarth Singh, and mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, an influential retired District Additional Judge (ADJ), have been booked under charges related to dowry death and harassment. But Twisha’s family has alleged that the investigation is not being conducted in a transparent manner, demanding immediate end “posthumous character trial" of their deceased daughter. How Twisha Met Samarth Singh Twisha Sharma, a beauty pageant winner-turned-communications professional, met Bhopal-based Samarth Singh on a dating app in 2024.
They struck up a courtship and the following year, she introduced him to her parents. “On May 12, 2025, we met Samarth and his family for the first time at our home. We had no idea that exactly a year later, we would find our daughter dead. I curse my decision to agree to the marriage," a Times Of India report quoted her father Navnidhi Sharma as saying. Alleged Dowry Demands Before Marriage Twisha’s family alleges that the groom’s family started making “demands" during the wedding preparation itself without using the word “dowry". “The word dowry was never directly used before marriage. But there were clear expectations about the scale of the wedding, jewellery, clothes and arrangements," the TOI report quoted Navnidhi Sharma as saying. He added that he gave Samarth Singh’s family Rs 2 lakh to address their displeasure over arrangements for drivers. Allegations Of Abuse After Marriage The first signs of abuse reportedly surfaced during the couple’s honeymoon, when Samarth allegedly pushed Twisha at the airport after an argument. According to her father, Twisha faced constant criticism throughout the short-lived marriage, particularly over the scale of the wedding and her lifestyle. He further alleged that she was not given money even for basic personal needs. Pregnancy, Abortion & Return To Bhopal Twisha had reportedly been expressing her desire to walk out of the marriage for several weeks. In April, she became pregnant but returned to her family in Noida after her husband and mother-in-law allegedly mistreated her and doubted the child’s paternity. “They kept telling her… she should abort the baby if she wanted to continue living in that house," he told TOI. He further said Twisha regretted her decision to marry Samarth, but decided to give the marriage a chance, hoping that terminating her pregnancy would be enough to “improve their behaviour".
Twisha’s father, and Army Major-brother Harshit Sharma, travelled back with her to Bhopal on April 22, where Samarth reportedly promised her family he would keep her happy thereafter. Twisha’s Final Phone Call Their hope was short-lived as Twisha called her mother, Rekha Sharma, on the night of May 12 this year. “I had an abortion. Book my ticket home, I don’t want to live here anymore," she reportedly said. The family said they booked a ticket for her for May 15, a journey she couldn’t make because of what happened next. “About 10 minutes into the call, we heard Samarth shouting in the background. The phone then got disconnected," TOI quoted her father as saying. ‘At 10:35PM, They Said Our Daughter Was No More’ For the next few minutes, the family’s calls to Twisha, Samarth and her mother-in-law Giribala Singh went unanswered. At 10:35pm, the latter called back to inform them their daughter was “no more". Family Rejects Marijuana, Mental Health Claims Twisha’s family immediately left for Bhopal and reached the city the next morning, where they have been camped since, demanding justice for their daughter. They alleged they were not allowed to see their daughter’s body initially, and when they finally were allowed, Twisha’s mother collapsed on seeing “bruises" and “ligature marks around the neck". The family says they are fighting the legal battle “almost entirely alone on the streets of Bhopal", citing lack of meaningful support from the local administration, political establishments, and women’s rights groups. Referring to the narratives circulating in the public and legal domain that claim Twisha suffered from mental instability or marijuana abuse issues, the family said they are deeply disturbed at the alleged attempt to divert attention away from the actual investigation.
“Because the girl is dead now, they think they can say anything against her and shift the blame," her father said. Twisha’s mother has also denied allegations that the family was financially dependent on her, or that Giribala Singh had given nearly Rs 8 lakh to their daughter, of which Rs 5 lakh was transferred to Twisha’s brother. “We never had any shortage of money. The only issue was that her in-laws were trying to sabotage her career," she alleged, denying claims that they had pushed Twisha into the glamour industry too young and abandoned her. Where The Investigation Stands The Bhopal sessions court has rejected the bail application of Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh and the Madhya Pradesh police have also announced Rs 10,000 for information leading to his arrest. Twisha’s mother-in-law, retired ADJ Giribala Singh, secured bail after the incident.
